Surf Science with Dom

One-to-One coaching, 3 hours

Surf Science with Dom is a focused, one-to-one session for surfers who want a deeper understanding of the ocean, their own responses within it, and how those factors influence confidence and performance.

These sessions draw on Dom Moore’s experience across surfing, paddle sports, freediving, foiling, and ocean rescue, and are shaped around the conditions on the day and the individual in the water. They are not lessons in the conventional sense; they are an opportunity to slow things down, identify what really matters for you, and build clarity in situations that previously felt uncertain or overwhelming.

How the session works

Each Surf Science session is individual.

We begin by looking at your current surfing through a simple knowledge, technique and fitness lens. This helps identify where progress is being limited, and which areas are likely to deliver the greatest return with focused attention.

From there, the session develops around your specific aims. For some surfers this may be wave selection, positioning and efficiency; for others it may be confidence in larger or more complex conditions, managing fatigue, or understanding how stress affects decision-making in the surf.

Time is split between discussion on land and practical work in the water, with the balance adjusted to suit the conditions and your needs on the day.

Confidence, judgement and decision-making

Many surfers find their progression is limited not by ability, but by how they respond to certain sensations or situations in the ocean. These might include fatigue, loss of breath, steep or unpredictable waves, crowded line-ups, or unfamiliar water colour and depth.

Where relevant, Surf Science sessions explore these responses and look at practical ways to engage with them more effectively. The emphasis is on controlled exposure, better understanding of environmental forces, and developing calm, repeatable strategies that can be applied independently after the session.

This approach supports confidence that is grounded in understanding, rather than avoidance or bravado.

In the water

Practical work takes place in real conditions and may include:

  • Reading and predicting how waves, wind and tides affect a specific stretch of coastline

  • Entry, exit, positioning and movement in the surf zone

  • Improving efficiency in paddling and wave catching

  • Managing wipeouts, recovery and self-rescue

  • Applying technique with greater awareness and intention

The aim is not to overload you with drills, but to create moments of clarity that you can recognise and reproduce in your own surfing.

Who this session is for

Surf Science with Dom is suited to surfers who:

  • Already surf independently and want to progress with more insight

  • Feel held back by confidence, fatigue, or decision-making rather than basic skills

  • Prefer a thoughtful, measured coaching style

  • Want tools and understanding they can continue to use long after the session

If you are unsure whether this is the right fit, a short conversation beforehand is encouraged.
