Foil Drive lessons at Surf Sanctuary are one-to-one sessions built around one thing: getting you flying.

Hydrofoiling is unlike anything else in the ocean. The moment the board lifts clear of the surface, drag disappears, noise drops away and everything speeds up and smooths out at the same time. Foil Drive opens the door to that sensation quickly and consistently, without waiting for perfect wind, perfect waves or years of paddle fitness. You spend less time trying to make things happen and more time actually riding the foil.

Lessons run from our base at The Headland Hotel, with most water time taking place in The Gazzle; a deep-water basin that works on all tides and lets us focus purely on flight, control and progression.

How the Lessons Work

Each lesson starts on land with a short briefing. We talk through your background, introduce the Foil Drive unit and controller, and set clear goals for the session. You’ll get a feel for how a foil occupies space, how power changes behaviour, and what matters once the board starts to lift.
On the water, progression is fast and rewarding. Riders begin prone, learning low-speed control, steering and self-rescue. This phase quickly unlocks independence and confidence, and gives you the freedom to move around and reset without pressure.
From there, lessons build through planing, knees-to-feet transitions and into repeated, controlled bursts of flight. The focus is on timing, body position and feel rather than brute force. As things click, flights naturally lengthen and control sharpens. You’ll start to sense how small inputs translate into lift, glide and speed.
Falling off is part of the fun. We cover bails and recovery deliberately so mistakes stay clean, learning stays fast, and sessions keep their momentum.
Foil Drive is used as a performance tool; a way to stack quality time on the foil and build instincts that would otherwise take seasons to develop.

Location and Safety

Most lessons take place in The Gazzle, a unique deep-water training area a short walk from Surf Sanctuary. It offers shelter from swell and prevailing winds, clear access and exit points, and freedom from breaking waves or surf-zone hazards.
Participants use inflatable foil boards, helmets, impact vests, boots and full-length wetsuits. Instructors ride Foil Drive-equipped hydrofoils, allowing assisted recovery, towing and close supervision without external craft. Sessions are actively managed and adjusted to conditions and rider ability throughout.

Who Foil Drive Lessons Are For

Foil Drive lessons are ideal for:
-
Confident board riders keen to experience hydrofoiling
-
Surfers or paddlers who want faster access to consistent flight
-
Hotel guests looking for a standout ocean experience
-
Anyone curious, capable and up for learning something genuinely new
-
No previous foiling experience is required, but you must be comfortable in open water.
Many clients start with a taster, then move into longer sessions once the foil bug bites. For those who want to go further, lessons can feed directly into our multi-day Foil Drive Clinics.
