  1. Kitesurf coaching with Will Bennet and Dom Moore 13th-14th July

    Hey all,

A quick but exciting update here to tell you that for the upcoming Kitesurf Ocean Confidence Course on 13th-14th July at Watergate Bay, Cornwall, I have teamed up with my very good friend and world class kitesurfer Will Bennet.

Dom Moore and Will Bennet kitesurf coaching

    Ready for a rockin’ weekend!

Will Bennet is a bona fide pioneer in surfkiting and was probably the first rider in the UK to start boosting and landing legitimate strapless aerials. He gained international attention by being the first guy to get slotted at One Eye in Mauritius, a wave that till Will turned up, people thought could only be ridden with straps on the board.

Look who’s just showed up at the beach!

Because this course is running in beautiful sunny July, we’ll be cutting back a bit on the stuff that deals with coping with survival in overhead surf and other heavy scenarios, and really upping the tempo on technique and perfecting your riding in surf.

Having a ball at Daymer Bay

Get yer hits in the pocket!

As always, the course is open ended – meaning that we can cover a broad skill base so those wanting to get off of the twinnies once and for all can learn the basics of stance and switching feet, whilst the more seasoned riders can discover the secrets of a 12 o’clock backhand smack or huge frontside air.

The training room at Watergate Bay Hotel

The Knights of the Round Table; this is where we feast on knowledge!

Once again the course will be run from the executive training suite at the stunning Living Space at Watergate Bay Hotel. Here, we can run through the essential theory elements in air conditioned comfort away from distractions, and a hot latte is never far away.

Clearing the mind before unleashing seven kinds of hell

This is a theory based course with practical elements. Regardless of wind, the course will run and there will be two water based elements that will get your blood pumping. Because you will already be up and riding and attempting the stuff we’re talking about, presentation and visual aids will give you the tools you need to get it all clear in your head for the next time you ride. If there is wind, for sure we ride, but the emphasis here is on feeding you with information and unravelling any puzzles you may have.

Get a little bit of ‘vert’ on those lip bashes

Will and I are really excited to be running this course, I feel it will be THE surfkite performance course of the season. We look forward to seeing you come and join us for a rockin’ weekend in The Kernow!

    6 places

Intermediate + (don’t hesitate to enquire about skill level requirements, basically you need to be able to ride independently, and have a thirst for riding waves at any level!)

  2. One to one surf lessons in Newquay

I wanted to let you all know that I am offering one-to-one surf coaching and video analysis for developing and intermediate surfers in the Newquay area.

Learn how to execute a top turn

Learning on the right kit is crucial to success

Most people have an enjoyable introduction to surfing in a group lesson on a foam surfboard. These lessons are great for catching that first ride and giving people the confidence to have a go themselves later on in their own time (between the black and white lifeguard flags).

However, as any surfer who has ‘made the journey’ will tell you, the learning curve soon flattens out and some big questions are asked:

    1. How do I get past the white water?

    2. What’s the best way to duck dive?

    3. How do I go along the wave face and not straight down?

    4. How do I start to make turns?

    5. Why do I struggle to catch waves??

    6. What is a floater / snap / cutback / reo and how on earth do I do them?

    You on your next holiday?

People can get stuck in the ‘developing’ phase for months, but with the correct guidance, coaching and feedback, it is possible to blast through this frustrating stage and get right on track to really enjoying the freedom of surfing waves the way you want to.

There is one big secret to duck diving, and that’s sinking the TAIL first. Trust me it works!

If you, or someone you know, would like to book a lesson with me you can bring your own gear or use some of the excellent kit that I have here. I have boards for people looking to progress up from foamies, and also for people looking to get into riding shorter boards as they come down from mini-mals (if this jargon doesn’t make sense, just take it that I have the boards for the job:) )

    Surf video coaching in Newquay

Mini mals and ‘big boy’ surfboards, video analysis and coaching support material accelerate the learning process during my coaching sessions

I use professional video analysis software so that we can go over your session whilst supping on a hot chocolate. Video coaching is widely considered to be one of the most powerful tools in a coach’s armory for getting their clients onto the next level.

    Backside top turn

Learn what parts of the wave you need to hit to throw buckets

One-to-one lessons get you away from the crowds, you learn at your own pace and work out what it is YOU want to learn with me. My courses are relaxed and informal but structured and you should expect a rich and intensive learning experience.

£45 per hour – includes all equipment

  3. A simple way to feel better in ten minutes

    Hello readers,

A few days ago I wrote a rather downbeat post enquiring about the health of kiteboarding as a sport. Though there is no smoke without fire, I wanted to gauge the response to writing a more controversial post than I usually do. And? Well, a 40% increase in traffic, 3 Re-Tweets, 15 comments, and 4 ping-backs later, it is clear that posts with something for people to get their teeth into are more engaging than good-news story telling.

BUT! This has always been a positive blog and lots of people have been clicking on my fitness and life boosting tips, so we’re bringing it right back to where it ought to be with this very simple mental exercise that I want you all to try, it will take about ten minutes…

    1. Write down three strong negative beliefs you have about yourself, such as:

    - I am crap with money

    - I get very nervous in front of groups of people

    -  I am hopelessly disorganised

Now, think of all the evidence / reasons you have to support these beliefs and write them down under each one. This can be actual incidents, or things people have said to you for example:

I get very nervous in front of groups of people because:

    - I avoid public speaking at all costs

    - I ‘died’ on stage at the school play when I was 11

    - My friends always point out that I go red when the attention is on me

    2. Now, we’re going to turn that frown upside down! It’s time to choose to believe something different about ourselves. Take each negative statement and turn it into a bright, shiny ‘I am’ positive, like this:

    - I am an excellent money manager

    - I am wonderfully confident and charismatic around others

    - I am brilliant at organising things

When we get the negative blinkers on, we miss all the things that doesn’t fit our views. When we take them off, we can start to see the evidence that shows our negative beliefs aren’t entirely true. So list the truths that supports your positive statements now, like this:

I’ve always got enough money to do the sports I love

    - My friends tell me how much they enjoy my funny stories when we’re down the pub

My family and friends love the fact that I remember all their birthdays and special occasions

You can apply this strategy to any areas of your life, as often as you need. So how do you feel now you’ve completed this little exercise? Let me know in the comments below!

  4. BKSA Powerkite Instructor Training Course: 18th-19th August, Weston-Super-Mare

I am running a BKSA Powerkite ITC in Weston-Super-Mare on the weekend 18th – 19th August.

Location: Uphill Village Community Hall, 53 Old Church Road, BS23 4XH

    Times: 9.30am – 5.30am both days

    Cost: £200 inc. course materials

    Why become a powerkite instructor?

Coaching and teaching are some of the most rewarding things we can do. When you help someone understand and navigate challenges in their path, you can bet they will feel great and as their coach, you will too.

Kiting is a ‘perfect fit’ when it comes to coaching. Because of the way we break the learning process down into bite-sized chunks, a natural conversation develops between the client and the coach. Unlike some sports where the results aren’t easily quantifiable, we can structure kiting lessons so that the client can visualise, and with a little bit of application, taste success.

Not-for-profit kite clubs are essential in the UK in maintaining access and promoting the best practise of the sport to new comers. The best way clubs can do this is with the appointment of a BKSA certified coach. Would you like to be that awesome guy or girl at your local spot who encourages new comers into the sport? Then coaching in kite sports could be for you.

Commercial kite schools require instructors and assistants to carry out lessons to their paying customers. The Powerkite ITC sets you up naturally to get on board with a kite school to begin earning money in exchange for sharing your knowledge and expertise. If you are interested in setting up your own kite school, then your journey starts with the Powerkite ITC.

The BKSA is the official governing body for kite sports within the UK and one of the, if not the most, respective kiting association worldwide. It offers genuine career progression opportunities to coaches within its scheme. Whether you want to get into coaching on a part time, volunteer basis to give something back to your community, or to embark on a professional coaching career, the Powerkite ITC gives you all the tools you need to realise your dream.
