A left with much texture
No real chronoligical order to these bloggins of the past week SUPing in Lanza, so now where heading back in time to Tuesday and a full day’s surfing at a lefthand point that rumbles into a narrow cove. The backwash and strong rips gave this wave a fair bit of chop and bump to it, and lends a genereal ‘victory at sea’ vibe to the time you spend in the water.
My photography hat was firmly on for this day, well, in between marathon go outs on the Fanatic fun shape surfboards we had with us. Of all the spots we surfed, excepting the beach, this place had the easiest entry and exit point. Once more the water was incredibly clear, the bright seaweed covering the reef below was beautiful. A strong rip ran out on the right hand side, doubling as a handy conveyer belt.
Smally and Charlie didn’t hang around, powering themselves into the wide, rumbly walls. You can see the water is pretty choppy at this spot, it was testament to the guys’ sure-footedness that they were able to paddle around this place without sploshing into the water every five minutes, it might have been easy to get in and out of the water, but standing around out there was no walk in the park.
Also with us on this day was Newquay bloke Nick Kelly. It wasn’t part of the plan, we didn’t even know he was there, as he was, on his family holiday with no surfing kit whatsoever. Anyway, he must have spotted us from afar because he materialised by our van, and no sooner had he explained his board-less plight to us than we thrust the 6’10 Fanatic and ION wetty into his hands. Proper bonus surf for El Nicko, and he got stuck straight in.
Smally knows this spot, as you’d expect after spending most of his adult life on the island, and this allowed him to snag some of the longer waves that day. But for one Peruvian fella who I forget the name of (but who was a very amiable chap), we had the whole place to ourselves. Tell you what, here’s a photo of the Peruvian gentleman first, and then we’ll run one of Smally.
Well, I think that about does us for this installment.
