Gone Till December
The hood that is, for now in late March, my quick-dryer (cheers Smiler for that one:)) is able to undergo a series of duck-dives without too bad an ice-cream headache. So no more neoprene on the head for at least 8 months!

Things were looking good for this morning according to last night’s forecast, and Smiler came round at the new 8am. We set off to Watergate but were kept in suspense as to the actual conditions until we actually paddled out because the fog was so thick.
Kinda like these shots, not just because they capture some fun days we had larking around on the SUP boards a couple of weeks ago, but because they give an idea of what the GoPro camera is capable of when you use it to shoot other people, and not just stick it on a mount and point it back towards yourself.
Here, I’m getting to grips with the new RRD Vision kitesurfing kite. It’s a three strut device that’s really intended to be sold as part of a package with the Placebo twin tip, but to be honest, most of the time I’ve been flying the Vision the waves have been cranking and so the Placebo got left in the van. By van, I mean Smiler’s van, since I don’t own one.
You do hear all sorts of scare stories about the locals throwing stones at visiting surfers and car breaks ins and so on, and whilst I’m sure there’s no smoke without fire and that the Latino Islanders can be very protective of certain waves, the vibe in the water in these mellow waves was rather relaxed and jovial.
Clearly this board doesn’t have the pointy nosed pintail outline of boards that you’d usually associated with faster, steeper waves, but it gets the wave count right up there and it has the versatility to excel in less than stellar waves too.
The Canarian SUP adventure continues with a full day out at a bouncy, textured left-hand point break. I took some of my more interesting surf photos at this spot.
The thing is though, Lanzarote, unlike much of Europe, has no continental shelf sapping the energy from the waves. So what may have been a head high swell when it hits the UK looks a lot like this when it slams into the lava reefs of Lanza…
Out here in Lanzarote, staying with Rob and Julie Small, owner / operators of Casa Penelope, a very nice villa in Tinajo for folks that want to get a bit more from Lanzarote. I’m here with my SUP Magazine editor’s hat on to cover a week with Fanatic SUP team racer Charlie Grey from Shoreham, [...]
So what began at the start of the month as ‘Project Green Grass’, my seven day surf trip at home has turned into a month long adventure.
